module menu icon Diagnosis: NICE algorithms

There is no single test to diagnose asthma. Instead, a combination of clinical history, symptoms and objective tests are used to confirm a diagnosis.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guideline contains three different algorithms:

  • Algorithm A: initial clinical assessment for adults, young people and children with suspected asthma
  • Algorithm B: objective tests for asthma in children and young people aged five to 16
  • Algorithm C: objective tests for asthma in adults aged 17 and over.
