module menu icon Reviewing epilepsy

A routine review of individuals with epilepsy by a GP should occur at least once a year. Adults who are diagnosed with epilepsy and have a treatment plan in place may not need to see the specialist but children and people with learning disabilities should be reviewed at least once a year by an epilepsy specialist.

A specialist should also be seen if an individual has been seizure-free for two years and would like to consider reducing or withdrawing from their drug treatment. There are risks associated with treatment withdrawal, including the consequence of seizures reoccurring and the patient not being allowed to drive whilst withdrawing from the medicine, for six months after stopping the treatment and if seizures occur again.
