Blood pressure should be regularly reviewed by the doctor, with follow up every three to four months for people using lifestyle measures, only until the blood pressure is controlled. Those starting antihypertensive drug treatment should be followed up after at least four weeks.
Individuals with high blood pressure should have an annual review to check their blood pressure, their adherence to the medication and their lifestyle. Renal function should also be checked annually. If the individual is not taking an antiplatelet drug or statin, their cardiovascular disease risk should be reassessed.
MURs can support the annual review to ensure medicine adherence and help to support lifestyle interventions.
NICE review
NICE is currently reviewing evidence and may make changes to the treatment targets which could result in more aggressive approaches to treating high blood pressure.
