Treatment for OAB syndrome includes general lifestyle tips, bladder training and pelvic floor exercises. Medication may also be prescribed. Medicines in the antimuscarinic group (e.g. oxybutynin) are most commonly prescribed.

They inhibit muscarinic receptors in the bladder to prevent contractions and delay the need to pass urine, but they are associated with side effects such as dry mouth and constipation. A newer medicine, mirabegron (e.g. Betmiga), stimulates different receptors in the bladder, which leads to increased storage capacity and less frequent passing of urine.

Mirabegron is useful for people who experience side effects from antimuscarinic medicines and for those who are on antimuscarinic medicines for other conditions, where a further medicine of the same group could increase the risk of adverse effects.
