Recommending Maloff Protect

Maloff Protect (atovaquone 250mg/proguanil hydrochloride 100mg) is a medicine recently reclassified from POM to P. It can be used as chemoprophylaxis for malaria. It is particularly effective against drug-sensitive and drug-resistant P. falciparum so is especially recommended where the pathogen may be resistant to other anti-malarials.

    Who is it for?

    Maloff Protect is suitable for people over 18 years that weigh over 40kg for chemoprophylaxis of
    P. falciparum malaria

    What is the dosage?
    close

    One tablet daily with food or a milky drink (to ensure maximum absorption) at the same time each day. Customers should commence the course 1-2 days prior to entering a malaria-endemic area, continue during the period of the stay and continue for 7 days after leaving the area

    Contraindications
    close

    Hypersensitivity to active ingredients, severe renal impairment, pregnancy/breastfeeding,
    kidney disease, history of depression, epilepsy, tuberculosis.

    Potential side effects

    The most commonly reported side effects include headache, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhoea

    Interactions with other medication
    close

    Include: efavirenz or boosted protease inhibitors, etoposide, metoclopramide, rifampicin or rifabutin, tetracycline, warfarin and other coumarin-based anticoagulants
