The mental health first aid (MHFA) course is a training programme that teaches people how to help individuals with mental health conditions and highlights the appropriate measures to take when someone is facing a mental health crisis. It does not make the person a counsellor, but it can help them to signpost people who are experiencing mental health problems to the appropriate help. It teaches people how to have conversations about mental health, including useful questions to ask, for example:

  • How are you feeling at the moment?
  • How long have you felt like this – is it an on-going issue?
  • Is there anything thing that I can do to help?
  • What kind of support do you think might help you?
  • The course also gives information on how to listen and phrases that should be avoided, for example not offering advice such as “pull yourself together” or “cheer up”. It will also increase people’s confidence in supporting someone who feels suicidal.
