A variety of methods can be used to protect injuries and provide support for injured joints, including taping or strapping, splints, braces, sleeves, and even soft or hard casts.

Knee braces are widely used to support the joint when running, to help reduce the risk of spraining a ligament and to protect against knocks, but "their effectiveness in preventing injury is unclear". However, ankle braces were considered effective in reducing ligament injuries, especially if the person has had a similar injury in the past.

Ankle braces and/or taping could potentially reduce the risk of repeat injuries by two- thirds, but there is a lack of evidence around the protective effect of high top shoes, and "mixed evidence" over the effectiveness of cushioning insoles.8

Factors to consider when recommending a sports support include the material. Neoprene is becoming increasingly popular in orthopaedic supports, but the thioureas often used to waterproof neoprene supports may cause allergic contact dermatitis.9
