Current NHS advice is to use PRICE for 48 hours, then stop compression and try moving the injured area.3 If PRICE is not sufficient, the NHS proposes additional treatment, including medicines, physiotherapy, sports massage, surgery and rehabilitation if necessary.

In addition, avoid HARM in the first 72 hours after the injury:6

  • Heat For example, hot baths, saunas, and heat packs
  • Alcohol Increases bleeding and swelling and decreases healing
  • Running Or any other form of exercise which may cause further damage
  • Massage May increase bleeding and swelling.
