Transitioning from other treatments

New patients diagnosed with asthma should be commenced on a SABA-free pathway. Switching patients on older regimens whose asthma is poorly controlled to a ‘when required’ low-dose ICS/formoterol AIR or low-dose MART will take time and a lot of education.

The Asthma Right Care (ARC) approach is one way to help tackle this. ARC wants to create a sense of discomfort around SABA use (like antibiotics) and create ‘SABA guardians’.
