During the initial phases of treatment, antidepressants in young people are associated with an increased risk of suicidal ideation and acts. This is because they can lift energy and motivation levels before mood begins to improve. Thus, the young person may have more energy and motivation to act on suicidal intent. All young people should be monitored very closely for any increase in suicidal ideation when starting antidepressant medication.
If a patient tells you they are experiencing suicidal ideation or discloses thoughts or plans to harm themselves, it is essential that these risks are highlighted to their GP and CAMHS immediately. If a patient is in crisis and has plans to harm themself or end their life, refer them to your local urgent care service. Urgent mental health support can also be sought by calling 111 and selecting option 2. If you are concerned that their life is in imminent danger, support can be sought via 999 or A&E.
