What nutritional changes could you discuss with Ahmed to reduce his risk of developing type 2 diabetes?

Ahmed has told you he has been advised to change his diet. Consider how motivated he is to make these changes, and what he thinks would be manageable options for him. You could explore the following dietary changes:

  • Reduce snacking on sweets and biscuits, and avoid adding sugar to coffee. Consider snacking on a lower-sugar fruit alternative, such as berries
  • Consider how family meals might need to change, for example, are his family happy to reduce their starchy carbohydrate intake?
  • Reduce the serving size of rice and bread to help reduce carbohydrate intake. He could bulk his meals out with more vegetables, as well as switch to wholegrain alternatives. Care must be taken regarding the carbohydrate content of different breads/grains, as these can vary
  • Eat more protein at mealtimes to help with satiety (how full someone feels), and to reduce the desire to keep snacking on sweets and biscuits between meals.
