Conclusions

Pharmacists have an important and growing role to play in the provision of oral contraception, both in terms of authorising repeat supplies and, in the future, initiating therapy. An assessment of suitability is crucial for a patient looking to receive oral contraception for the first time as opposed to continuing with their existing medication and needs to take into consideration additional factors.

There are also special considerations for certain patient groups, including gaining consent from someone who is very young or has additional learning/disability needs.

As rigid as protocols are, there is also scope to individualise advice and care to best suit the patient. This will increase the chances of them correctly using the oral contraceptive, which in turn will increase its effectiveness.
