BMA agrees new deal for GPs

BMA agrees new deal for GPs

The BMA has agreed in principle a new deal for GPs.

GPC England has accepted amendments to the 2025/26 GP contract following two months of negotiations with the Government.

The contract, which includes an overall funding uplift of £969m, will be accepted provided the Government commits to a full renegotiation of the new national contract, beginning in this Parliament, says the BMA.

The deal represents a 7.2 per cent funding increase and marks the first agreed GP contract in four years. As a result the BMA has paused its campaign of collective action.

Commenting on the settlement, Company Chemists’ Association chief executive Malcolm Harrison said it is now time to focus on the community pharmacy contract.

“We are hopeful that this positive intent will also be reflected in the contract for pharmacies that is currently being negotiated. Core funding for community pharmacy has decreased in real terms by over £1bn since 2015/16, and it is past time for pharmacies to see a funding increase,” he said.

NHSE says GPs will be required to ensure the functionality in GP Connect is enabled by October. On this, Mr Harrison added: “Enabling GP Connect will allow for more integration between GPs and community pharmacy. This is essential to providing patients with the best possible care and bringing together all parts of primary care.”
