Training your team and ensuring everyone's knowledge is up-to-date are important CPD triggers. We suggest that you get the team together for a training session based on the activities below and discuss the various ways in which you can offer customers and patients added care in this category.
Subject: pain
This Train Your Team checklist provides support and information to run a team training session on women's health. This content can also be used for your own CPD.
REFLECTION
- Do we focus on giving women good, simple information on maintaining and improving their health?
- Do we understand the difficulties women face in looking after their health? Do we acknowledge these in our advice?
- Are we judgmental or empathetic with customers who are struggling with healthy living issues?
- Are we aware of the signs and symptoms that could relate to serious health issues? What questions do we ask?
- Are my staff fully aware of the need to check on a customer’s self-diagnosis?
TRAINING CHECKLIST
Ensure your support staff understand the following key points:
- The importance of healthy lifestyle tips, a healthy balanced diet and physical activity
- How to achieve a healthy balanced diet and physical activity in the context of a busy life
- OTC medicines (e.g. sunscreens, calcium and vitamin D supplements) that particularly aid prevention of health issues
- When to refer to the pharmacist.
ACTION. I WILL:
- Re-assess our communication skills in delivering lifestyle information and advice
- Ask a member of the pharmacy team to identify and keep information on local opportunities for physical activity (e.g. cycle ways, swimming pools, gyms)
- Train my pharmacy assistants to ensure that they can meet the points in this training checklist.
PRACTICE POINTS
- What are the physical activity guidelines for adults? Visit the NHS Choices page on adult fitness. How can you use this information to advise a young, busy mum who tells you she does little physical activity? How might she fit in more exercise into her day-to-day life?
- Bacterial vaginosis is frequently missed in the context of a self-diagnosis of thrush. What are the symptoms compared with thrush? Discuss with the pharmacist.
