The number of diabetes-related amputations are at an “all-time record high,†according to Diabetes UK.
The charity says that, based on data produced by Public Health England, there are now 135 diabetes-related amputations in England a week. The average number of diabetes-related amputations in England was 7,042 a year between 2011 and 2014.
This compared to an average of 6,677 annually between 2010 and 2013, equivalent to seven more diabetes-related amputations each week. The charity says that good diabetes management and foot care would potentially avoid up to 80 per cent of these amputations.
