Training your team and ensuring everyone's knowledge is up-to-date are important CPD triggers. We suggest that you get the team together for a training session based on the activities below and discuss the various ways in which you can offer customers and patients added care in this category.
Subject:Â foot and leg care
This Train Your Team checklist provides support and information to run a team training session on foot and leg care. This content can also be used for your own CPD.
Reflection
- Are we knowledgeable about foot care issues? Do we take them seriously?
- Can we recognise the differences between corns, calluses and bunions? Do we know the best management of these conditions?
- Do we seek to prevent foot and leg problems in the pharmacy? Do we consider the use of appropriate footwear, particularly for those of us who stand for much of the day?
- Can we give advice on size and the proper fitting of flight socks?
- Do we consider foot problems and footwear as risk factors for falls in older people?
- Do we have a good visible display of foot care products in the pharmacy?
Training checklist
Ensure your support staff understand the following key points:
- Many minor foot and leg problems can be treated in the pharmacy
- The incidence of foot pain and its impact on quality of life
- The importance of treating toe nail infections as early as possible
- Specific lifestyle tips for customers with foot or leg pain
- When to refer customers to the pharmacist.
Action. I will:
- Consider our skills in communication, including sensitivity around footwear, with customers in foot pain
- Evaluate our display and range of foot care products
- Consider foot problems and footwear as risks for falls in older people
- Train my pharmacy assistants to ensure that they can meet all the points in this training checklist.
Practice points
- Although DVT may produce no symptoms, what possible symptoms can occur? When would you refer a customer with aching legs to the pharmacist?
- Are you confident when advising customers on the appropriate sizing for flight socks? Do you need training?
