Recurrent diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is associated with “a substantially elevated risk of deathâ€, says Diabetologia.
Researchers at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh found that 5.2 per cent of those with a single DKA admission died during follow-up, which lasted a median of 4.1 years. Mortality rose to 13.5 per cent in those with two to five DKA admissions over a median of 3.7 years, while 23.4 per cent of those with more than five admissions died over a 2.4 year follow-up.
