Intensive antihypertensive treatment (AHT) does not increase the risk of falls or nonspinal fractures, according to analysis of the ACCORD study.
Researchers analysed 3,099 patients aged 40-79 years with type 2 diabetes. Intensive and standard treatment with antihypertensives aimed to reduce systolic blood pressure to below 120mmHg and less than 140mmHg respectively. After a year, mean systolic blood pressure was 133mmHg and 119mmHg in the standard and intensive groups respectively.
No statistically significant difference in falls emerged after 3.5 years between the two groups
