Diploma director Paula Higginson answers questions about CPPE and the University of Manchester's postgraduate courses.
In September (2014), the University of Manchester and CPPE will be welcoming its fourth cohort of students to the postgraduate certificate, postgraduate diploma and masters level qualifications in pharmacy public health.
Q. How will the programme support pharmacists in the current environment of the NHS?
A. In completing the programme, pharmacists will acquire and develop an advanced knowledge and in-depth understanding of the public health agenda. The programme aims to instil confidence to support those pharmacists seeking out opportunities to provide public health services.
Q. How can it help to deliver high-quality services?
A. The programme consists of a range of core and optional modules, giving the student choice in the areas of public health they want to develop to demonstrate their ability as an advanced community public health practitioner. The modules build on the development and promotion of a public health service.
Q. What public health topics are available?
A. This year we will be offering modules on sexual health, population screening, cancer, long-term conditions and advanced MURs, and cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
Q. Didn't one of your students receive an award for Community Pharmacist of the Year?
A. Yes, Roisin Breen, who is studying a masters degree in Pharmacy Public Health Services, was awarded the C&D award for her tireless work in promoting public health in her community. The judges commented that: €Roisin's health promotion strategy is her strongest attribute. She has identified health inequalities and targeted these groups. Omagh is lucky to have such a driven, caring and passionate community pharmacist.€
Q. What feedback have you received from students?
A. Feedback from our students has been very positive; they have had an engaging and challenging learning experience. Our external examiner was highly complimentary of the standard of their work.
Our use of web-based learning opportunities has given students the freedom to learn at the time that suits them the best and we work hard to find assessment slots that fit around the needs of our students.
One of our masters students, Simon Butterworth, summed up what he had learned from the programme as follows: €I have a vastly better understanding of what public health is€¦health promotion, health protection and service quality, and how we can use it within pharmacy and develop services€¦ Hopefully I can now provide better and safer services for my patients.€
Q. Where can pharmacists register their interest?
A. They can apply online via: www.mhs.manchester.ac.uk/postgraduate/programmes/taughtmasters/pharmacypublichealth or contact us at diploma@cppe.ac.uk
